Common Agency and the Revelation Principle

چکیده

In the common agency problem multiple mechanism designers simultaneously attempt to control the behavior of a single privately informed agent. The paper shows that the allocations associated with equilibria relative to any ad hoc set of feasible mechanisms can be reproduced as equilibria relative to (some subset of) the set of menus. Furthermore, equilibria relative to the set of menus are weakly robust in the sense that it is possible to find continuation equilibria so that the equilibrium allocations persist even when the set of feasible mechanisms is enlarged. In agency problems with a single principal, no loss of generality is involved when the principal is restricted to offer standard direct mechanisms. When there are multiple principals things are more complicated because of the fact that the agent knows about the mechanisms that have been offered by all the principles at the time that he communicates with any particular principal. A principal who recognizes this can construct a mechanism that makes the ∗Thanks are due to Larry Epstein, Meg Meyer, Carolyn Pitchik, Lars Stole and Sergei Severinov for helpful comments. The Revelation and Delegation Principles in Common Agency Games

In the context of common agency adverse-selection games we illustrate that the revelation principle cannot be applied to study equilibria of the multi-principal games. We then demonstrate that an extension of the taxation principle – what we term the “delegation principle” – can be used to characterize the set of all common agency equilibria. Common Agency games with separable preferences

This paper examines the role of the revelation principle in common agency games. We show how the introduction of a separability condition on the preferences of the agent is sufficient for the revelation principle to hold. Therefore, it is still possible to restrict attention to direct mechanisms without any loss of generality even when competition over contracts is considered. JEL Classificatio...

The revelation principle and regularity conditions

The revelation principle asserts that every outcome brought by a mechanism is realized by a truthful direct mechanism. The present paper investigates the regularity conditions of these two mechanisms in the continuous space of the agent’s type. It questions what regularity condition a general mechanism confers upon a direct mechanism through the revelation principle. By so doing, we elucidate t...

Imperfect Commitment and the Revelation Principle

This paper extends the revelation principle to environments in which the mechanism designer cannot fully commit to the outcome induced by the mechanism. We show that he may optimally use a direct mechanism under which truthful revelation is an optimal strategy for the agent. In contrast with the conventional revelation principle, however, the agent may not use this strategy with probability one...

Revelation Principles in Multistage Games∗

We study the revelation principle in multistage games for perfect Bayesian equilibium and sequential equilibrium. The question of whether or not the revelation principle holds is subtle, as expanding players’ opportunities for communication expands the set of consistent beliefs at off-path information sets. In settings with adverse selection but no moral hazard, Nash, perfect Bayesian, and sequ...
